Tourist visa requirements

Please note the following and file an application accordingly for tourist visa to visit Nepal.

  1. Send your valid passport with a duly filled out visa application form affixing a passport size photo on it. Passport should remain valid at least for six months
    from the date of entry into Nepal.
  2. Visa fee can be sent by money order or cashier's check in the name of ROYAL NEPALESE EMBASSY. If two or more applicants applying together, you
    may make a single money order or cashier's check multiplying the fee by the number of applicants. PERSONAL CHECKS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.
  3. Send a self-addressed strong envelope with sufficient postage to return passport/s. Regular or first class mail has no tracking number to inquire the delivery
    status. We advise applicants to send prepaid envelope of any kind of express mail to return passport/s. We take no responsibility of any undelivered
    passport/s because of the insufficient postage, a weak envelope to bear up the load, etc.
  4. Visa fees: If you are applying for the first time in the current year, the following fee will be charged:
    (a)  Free Visa for 3 (or less than) days single entry;  (b)   US $ 30.00 for 60 days single entry; (c) US $ 80.00 for 60 days multiple entries
    If you are re-applying within 150 days of your last visit to Nepal, within the same year, the following visa fee will be charged
    (i)  US $ 30.00 for 30 days single entry   (ii) US $ 30.00 for 30 days multiple entries
  5. There will be no charge for children under 10 years. However, visa is required.
  6. Visa once issued cannot be withdrawn, visa fee cannot be refunded after visa is issued, and it must be used within six months from the date of issue.
  7. It takes 7 business days to issue visa after the application is received at the Embassy.
  8. The Royal Nepalese Consulate General in New York also issues tourist visas, whose address is:

  9. Canadian and/or non Canadian nationals currently residing in Canada may also apply for visa to the Honorary Royal Nepalese Consulate General, 1200 Bay Street, Suite 1203 Toronto, ON M5R 2A5 Tel: 416 975 9292 X 239 Fax: 416 975 9275.
  10. Tourist visa may also be obtained at any of the following entry points:
    Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu; Biratnagar (Jogbani), Birgunj (Raxaul), Bhairahawa (Sunauli) and Kakarbhitta (Panitanki) on Nepal-India border and Kodari on Nepal China border.
  11. Tourist traveling on a short duration visas can get them extended if they so desire. The Department of Immigration, Kathmandu and Pokhara Immigration Office extend visas and charge US $ 30.00 for 30 days for a total period of 120 days. Tourist visa for further period of 30-days can be granted if the Department of Immigration is satisfied with the reason furnished by the applicant without exceeding altogether 150 days between January and December of the current year.
  12. Tourists carrying more than 2,000.00 US dollar or equivalent foreign currency are requested to declare in the Custom Declaration Form at the time of arrival in Nepal. Those returning from Nepal with undeclared money exceeding US $ 2,000.00 or equivalent foreign currency may be interrogated for further legal actions in accordance with Foreign Exchange Regulation Act of Nepal.
  13. Tourists traveling by car should possess a valid Passage de Carnet.

Diplomatic Visa


Diplomatic Visa


Diplomats and their family members are eligible for diplomatic visa free of charge. Applicant must submit an official request through diplomatic mission or foreign ministry/department along with original passport and duly filled-out application form with one passport size photo affixed on that for diplomatic visa.

Official Visa


Official Visa


Following are eligible for official visa free of charge:

  1. Administrative and technical staff of diplomatic missions accredited to Nepal and sitting Honorary Royal Nepalese Consul/Consul General;
  2. Advisor and experts working in Nepal under an official agreement with HMG Nepal;
  3. UN officials deputed in Nepal and UN Laisses Passer holders;
  4. Official working in the International/Regional Organization located in Nepal.
  5. Persons visiting Nepal to attend meeting, conference, etc. at the invitation of His Majesty's Government of Nepal, other Government owned bodies, UNO, Regional Organizations and thier subordinate entities.
  6. Official Passport holders visiting for official business

Official Visa Requirement

Applicant must submit an official request through diplomatic mission or foreign ministry/department along with original passport and duly filled-out application form with one passport size photo affixed on that for official visa.

Non Residential Nepalese Visa


Non Residential Nepalese Visa

With the Second Amendment of the Immigration Rule, 2059, a new provision has been added for special type of visa known as Non-residential Nepalese Visa. This visa facilitates non-residential Nepalese or the people of Nepalese origin and their family members to stay in Nepal for longer duration for personal work, for business or for study and research purpose. The visa is valid up to 10 years and is renewable.
The Department of Immigration in Nepal is authorized to issue the visa with the approval of the Ministry of Home for the first time. The application for the visa may be submitted either through the Royal Nepalese Missions abroad or directly at the Department of Immigration in Nepal.

Visa fee: US $ 100.00 or equivalent foreign currency for the period of one year. However, for students the charge will be half of the above amount.

Study Visa


Study Visa


Persons wishing to study or engage in teaching or research in Nepal under the scholarship or any other program approved by His majesty's Government of Nepal (HMG) and their family members are eligible for study visa.

  1. Those, wishing to engage in the academic activities mentioned above on their own, should submit a proof/receipt of foreign currency equivalent to US $ 3,000.00 for the applicants and US $ 2,000.00 for their family members for each year to cover their expenses while in Nepal. In absence of proof, they are required to furnish credibility/guarantee certificate.
  2. Initially, the study visa is issued for one year, is extended as required keeping in view the progress report as well as other activities of the applicant. However, in case of students and research scholars, study visa is extended to cover the duration of the academic year or the research activities.
  3. Application for study visa must include the recommendation of the Concerned Ministry of His Majesty's Government of Nepal.

Non-Tourist Visa


Non-Tourist Visa


The Following persons are eligible for non-tourist visa

  1. Persons engaged in social and developmental activities in Nepal approved by HMG and funded by the foreign governments or NGOs;
  2. Persons employed in foreign missions-run projects and recommended by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal;
  3. News reporter or agents approved by the Ministry of Information and Communication of Nepal;
  4. Domestic helpers of diplomatic and official visa holders recommended by the concerned Ministry of HMG;
  5. Persons employed with HMG's apporval by Nepalese firms, companies, organizations, industrial establishment or any other agencies with fixed remuneration;
  6. International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO's) employees with the recommendation of concerned Ministry of His Majesty's Government of Nepal;
  7. Holder of foreign passports whose parents are Nepalese citizens and other foreign citizens of Nepalese origin visiting Nepal to meet their relatives;
  8. Foreign nationals married to Nepalese nationals who apply for such visa with a copy of their marriage certificate;
  9. Persons recommended by the concerned Ministry of HMG for such visa who are working in Nepal under an agreement or a memorandum of understanding concluded at the governmental or non-governmental level;
  10. Persons who are visiting Nepal for the feasibility study for setting up an industry or any other business and recommended by the concerned Ministry of HMG for such visa not exceeding a six months;
  11. A tour operator applying with the recommendation letter from the concerned Ministry of His Majesty's Government of Nepal;
  12. Persons applying for visa with the recommendation of the concerned ministry of His Majesty's Government of Nepal(HMG/N) to work for non-governmental organizations(NGOs) in Nepal as per the agreement concluded with the Social Walfare Council or the concerned Ministry of HMG/N; and
  13. Such other foreign nationals whom His Majest'sGovernment of Nepal consideres eligible for Non-Toursit Visa.

Non-tourist visa is issued initially for a maximum period of one year, which can be extended as necessary.

Visa Fee:

  • US $ 60.00 per month for the first year and US $ 100.00 for the second year for those on non-tourist;
  • US $ 10.00 per month for news agent or reporter;
  • US $ 20.00 per month for those working at office or projects;
  • US $ 10.00 per month for those visiting to meet their relatives;
  • US & 10.00 per month for marriage visa; and
  • US & 5.00 per month for relation visa;

Business Visa


Business Visa


The following foreigners and their family members are eligible for business visa on the recommendation of the concerned bodies:
1. Foreign investors who obtained license to invest in the Kingdom of Nepal in any business or industrial enterprise and their authorized representatiives; and
2. Persons with license to invest in Nepal in export trade.

Business visa with multiple entries for one year and five years can be obtained from the Department of Immigration on the recommendation of the Ministry of Industry. Business visa is renewable as required.

Issuing authority: Department of Immigration.
Visa fee(first time & renewal)
:US $ 100.00 or equivalent amount in Nepalese currency for multiple entries visa valid for one year; and
: US $ 250.00 or equivalent amount in Nepalese currency for multiple entries visa valid for five years.

Residential Visa


Residential Visa


Persons eligible for residential visa:

  1. Internationally renowned;
  2. Capable of contributing in the social, economic and cultural development of Nepal;
  3. Former Nepalese citizens;
  4. Person who invests one hundred thousand US dollar or equivalent money in Nepalese currency at once in nay industrial enterprise in Nepal; and
  5. Retirees.

Foreign citizens mentioned in the section (e) above should submit a proof that they are capable of spending $ 20,000.00 or equivalent each year during their stay in Nepal.

Issuing authority: Ministry of Home of HMG Nepal through Department of Immigration.

Visa fee for multiple entries
:Nepalese currency equivalent to US $ 200.00 for period of one year if applying for the first time;
: Nepalese currency equivalent to US $ 100.00 for a period of one year if applying for renewal; and
:Nepalese currency equivalent to US $700.00 and US $1,200.00 applying for the first time and for renewal respectively for retirees persons mentioned in section(e) above.

Transit Visa


Transit Visa


Persons eligible for transit visa:

  1. Travelers with confirmed tickets for onward journey are granted transit visa for 48 hours.
  2. Person/s who departed Nepal but denied entry into country of intended travel, passengers of forced landed aircraft.


Issuing authority: Airport immigration office.

Visa fee: US $ 5.00
